Following Australia’s unexpected semi-final exit from the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, former head coach Matthew Mott has backed the team to bounce back with renewed determination. Despite a dominant group stage performance, Australia was defeated by a formidable Indian side in the semi-finals. This loss marks a rare blip for the team, which now finds itself outside of consecutive ICC event finals for the first time since 2009.
Mott, who was instrumental in Australia’s success between 2018 and 2023, insists that the current team is as strong as ever, possessing a remarkable blend of talent and experience. “I think the team is as strong as it’s ever been. I think it’s the most balanced, it’s got the most amount of match-winners,” he commented.
He pointed to the bright performances of players like Phoebe Litchfield, who delivered a century in the crucial semi-final, and Ash Gardner, as evidence of the team’s depth. Mott suggested that the pain of this defeat could be a powerful catalyst for future achievements, referencing the team’s rebound after a similar semi-final loss in 2017. “It’s going to hurt, but as we found in 2017 sometimes those things happen for a reason and can motivate you and kick you to even higher levels,” Mott shared. He also commended India’s performance, acknowledging their class in chasing a challenging total, but firmly believes Australia remains the world’s premier team.
