The weather in Chennai has escalated to an orange alert level today, November 17, 2025, with the IMD predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. This severe weather forecast, attributed to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, has led district administrations to declare a holiday for all educational institutions in Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. These areas are experiencing significant waterlogging due to continuous overnight rain. Safety advisories are in effect, urging residents to restrict travel. The orange alert covers a broader swathe of Tamil Nadu, including Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal. Many other districts are under a yellow alert. Chennai’s weather is set to remain overcast with substantial showers, with temperatures around 29-30 degrees Celsius. In contrast, several other states, including Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh, are unaffected by adverse weather and are operating under normal schedules.
