Guwahati is set to host the critical second Test of the India-South Africa series, commencing on Saturday, November 22. India, reeling from a 30-run loss in the first Test, is determined to bounce back and prevent a series defeat on home soil.
The Indian team faces a leadership challenge as captain Shubman Gill has been declared unavailable due to a neck injury. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side for the first time in this format. Pant is tasked with inspiring his team against a formidable South African unit, which has not lost a Test match under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma.
Speaking about his new role, Pant conveyed his honor and commitment: “I’m really proud that BCCI has given me this opportunity. You know, whenever you’re leading your country, it’s the proudest moment.” He acknowledged the pressure but emphasized his readiness.
An interesting development for this Test is the unusual timing of the tea break, which will be taken before lunch. This alteration to the standard Test match schedule has been approved by the BCCI due to the specific climatic conditions in Guwahati, particularly the early sunset. The need to optimize play time in accordance with the region’s natural light cycles prompted this decision.
