Russia has discreetly commenced the delivery of its premier fifth-generation fighter jet, the Su-57, to an undisclosed foreign client. The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) officially confirmed that two of these advanced aircraft have been transferred and are now actively deployed.
Vadim Badekha, head of UAC, conveyed to state media that the two Su-57 aircraft have been supplied to a foreign partner and are presently on combat duty, meeting the client’s expectations.
Details regarding the purchasing country have not been made public. However, Russia’s state-run arms export agency, Rosoboronexport, had earlier announced in November 2024 that a contract for the Su-57 was secured, though the buyer’s identity was kept under wraps.
Intelligence and analysis suggest Algeria could be the recipient, given that the North African nation’s media reported in February about its pilots undergoing Su-57 training in Russia.
The Su-57 stands as Russia’s most technologically advanced fifth-generation stealth fighter, with production numbers being relatively limited. Globally, the manufacturing of serial-production fifth-generation combat aircraft is a capability held only by the United States (F-35, F-22), China (J-20, J-35), and Russia (Su-57).
The export configuration, known as the Su-57E, features distinct electronic systems, avionics, and software specifically adapted for international customers. The successful handover of these two jets indicates that Russia’s defense manufacturing sector remains robust, even during periods of significant global tension.
Industry experts are weighing possibilities, suggesting Russia might be continuing production lines or fulfilling orders from its existing fleet. The Su-57 is distinguished by its cutting-edge stealth design, comprehensive digital integration, and multi-role combat effectiveness. Western defense circles have been closely tracking Russia’s military production capabilities, especially since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, making this maiden export of the Su-57 a development of considerable interest.
