The Punjab government has officially elevated three key locations – Sri Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, and the Golden Temple corridor in Amritsar – to the status of holy cities. Consequently, the sale of alcohol, meat, and tobacco is now prohibited within these designated zones. This pivotal decision was formalized during a special session of the Punjab Assembly, held in Sri Anandpur Sahib to observe the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann articulated that this move is crucial for preserving the sanctity and cultural identity of these important Sikh spiritual hubs. The government also announced the creation of a special fund dedicated to improving the infrastructure, hygiene, and conservation of these sites. Recognizing the areas around the Sikh takhts as sacred is seen as a historic and vital step for Punjab’s heritage and faith. The announcement has garnered widespread approval, with many leaders hailing it as a long-awaited measure.
