The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by a week, benefiting citizens in 12 states and Union Territories. This move allows more time for voters to verify and correct their details, ensuring a more accurate voter database. The draft electoral list, a preliminary version for public scrutiny, is now slated for release on December 16, a change from the initial December 9 date. The final publication of the electoral roll, a critical step for upcoming elections, has been rescheduled to February 14, 2026, from the original February 7. This comprehensive revision process is vital for electoral integrity. The states and UTs involved in this second phase of the SIR include Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. The first phase of this initiative was previously concluded in Bihar.
