Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan has sharply criticized the intrusive practices of the paparazzi, deeming their behavior ‘strange’ and questioning their role in society during a recent discussion at the We The Women Asia event in Mumbai. Bachchan, known for her candid nature, differentiated between the professional media she respects and the paparazzi she largely disdains.
Expressing a deep respect for journalism, Bachchan explained her personal connection to the media, stating, ‘I’m the product of the media.’ However, she unequivocally declared her relationship with paparazzi as ‘zero,’ highlighting a significant disconnect. She questioned the authority and qualifications of paparazzi, asking, ‘Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country?’ drawing a contrast with her father’s journalistic background.
Bachchan pointedly criticized the attitude of paparazzi who, she feels, believe owning a mobile phone grants them unrestricted access to photograph individuals. She described their often tight-fitting, casual attire and their intrusive actions with disdain. ‘Magar ye jo bahar drain-pipe tight gande gande pant pahen ke haath mein mobile leke… they think they have a mobile in their hand so they can take your picture?’ she questioned, conveying her strong disapproval.
The actress further elaborated on the problematic nature of the verbal taunts and comments made by paparazzi, questioning their education and societal background. She challenged the notion that individuals using social media platforms like YouTube are fit to represent the public. Dismissing online negativity, Bachchan stated, ‘I don’t give a damn,’ and compared intrusive photographers to ‘chuha (rat)’ entering one’s home uninvited with a camera.
Bachchan also addressed the alleged practice of some young actors using paparazzi for self-promotion. She called this ’embarrassing’ and questioned their celebrity status if they require staged photo opportunities, such as at airports. This stance aligns with her past public encounters where she has firmly addressed photographers’ behavior.
Her latest film, Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,’ achieved national recognition with an award and was released in 2023, featuring a star-studded cast.
