The vibrant academic community surrounding the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus is reeling from the violent death of Shivank Avasthi, an Indian doctoral student. Avasthi was discovered fatally shot by police in the vicinity of Highland Creek Trail on Tuesday. Expressing deep anguish, the Consulate General of India in Toronto confirmed it is providing support to the bereaved family and working with local police to investigate the shooting thoroughly. This incident casts a shadow over the city, especially as it is the second homicide of an Indian national in a short span, the first being Himanshi Khurana, whose case is being treated as intimate partner violence. The proximity of the shooting to campus has intensified discussions about student safety and security in the Highland Creek area. Law enforcement is urging the public to come forward with any relevant information or dashcam footage that could assist in their investigation.
