BMW is embracing sustainability by incorporating natural fibre composites into its future production models. The BMW Group has developed a series of these innovative composites after years of dedicated research. These materials, derived from organic substances, have successfully passed stringent tests, proving their reliability for use in roof structures.
Developed in collaboration with Bcomp, a Swiss cleantech company, these lightweight, flax-based composites are designed to reduce CO2e emissions. BMW’s venture capital arm, BMW i-ventures, has a stake in Bcomp.
The use of natural fibres is gaining importance for its ability to reduce CO2 emissions and lower the overall carbon footprint. Tests confirm the suitability of these composites for both interior and exterior components. Replacing standard carbon fibre parts with these sustainable materials is anticipated to decrease emissions by approximately 40% across the BMW range.
The effectiveness of these parts has already been proven in BMW M Motorsport’s Formula E racing program in 2019. Subsequent applications include the BMW M4 DTM and M4 GT4. BMW became an official partner for BMW M Motorsport in 2022, specifically for the BMW M4 GT4.
These parts are engineered to withstand the rigors of the BMW GT4 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, including impact and mechanical fatigue. The parts from BMW M Motorsport and Bcomp will soon be used in future BMW M series vehicles.
