E20 fuel is the subject of considerable discussion. Addressing this, Nalinikant Gollagunta, Head of the Automotive Division at Mahindra & Mahindra, has clarified that E20 fuel is completely safe and will not cause harm to vehicles. However, he acknowledged that the use of E20 fuel will result in reduced vehicle mileage. The company is scheduled to release detailed advisories for its customers in the coming week.
Concerns are particularly pronounced regarding older vehicle models. Experts suggest that certain rubber parts, seals, and gaskets in older vehicles may need to be replaced. The government asserts that this is a straightforward procedure, but it could represent an increased cost for typical vehicle owners.
The central government has made it clear that ethanol blending will continue without alteration. This is driven by three primary factors: reducing dependence on crude oil imports, supporting sugarcane farmers, and lowering carbon emissions. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also dismissed criticisms on social media, attributing them to political motivations.
While there is not much technical dispute regarding E20, the real challenge is gaining customer trust. Conflicting statements from automotive companies have only served to confuse the public further. Mahindra’s transparent approach and the upcoming advisory have the potential to ease customer concerns. Nevertheless, the major question persists: Are Indian consumers prepared to accept a minor decrease in mileage and performance to embrace a future of cleaner energy?
