India’s initiative to blend ethanol with petrol, especially the E20 blend, aims to lower pollution levels and reduce reliance on imported fuels. Recent feedback from vehicle owners and experts highlights concerns about reduced mileage with E20 fuel. One engineer reported a decline in his car’s fuel efficiency after switching to E20. This is in contrast to the NITI Aayog’s recommendation that the price of E20 should be lower to account for its reduced calorific value. Research indicates potential mileage decreases of up to 7% for four-wheelers and 4% for two-wheelers when using E20. However, the ARAI studies found no significant negative impacts. The Supreme Court upheld the E20 policy, dismissing a challenge and supporting the government’s view that E20 supports sugarcane farmers. The court’s decision underlines the government’s commitment to E20, recognizing its contribution to reducing energy imports, increasing farmers’ incomes, and fostering environmental preservation. The policy reflects a multi-pronged approach to address environmental concerns, promote economic growth in the agricultural sector, and decrease dependence on foreign resources.
