
The Indian automotive market is experiencing a shift towards hybrid technology, with numerous SUVs and cars slated to embrace this trend by 2026-27. Maruti Suzuki will introduce its in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain in the Fronx compact crossover and the next-generation Baleno hatchback in 2026. Mahindra’s XUV 3XO will also incorporate hybrid technology in the coming year. The mid-size SUV segment will see the arrival of the Honda Elevate hybrid in 2026, followed by the new-generation Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in 2027. The Renault Duster, upon its return, will offer various powertrain options, including hybrid, petrol, and CNG variants.
Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform facilitates hybrid integration. The vehicle manufacturer recently unveiled its new NU_IQ platform, which supports various powertrains, including hybrid options. This platform allows future Mahindra SUVs to be equipped with hybrid power. The XUV 3XO, set to launch in 2026, will be Mahindra’s first hybrid offering and will likely feature a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine combined with a hybrid system.
Honda is preparing to launch its first hybrid SUV. Production of Honda’s inaugural hybrid SUV will soon commence at its Tapukara plant in Alwar, Rajasthan. The market launch is anticipated in the second half of 2026. Honda might use the City e:HEV’s Atkinson cycle 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain for the Honda Elevate hybrid.
The 2025 Maruti Fronx will showcase the brand’s newly developed strong hybrid powertrain based on a 1.2-liter Z-series petrol engine. The same powertrain will be integrated into the next-generation Baleno, planned for a 2026 launch.
The third-generation Renault Duster is slated for a petrol engine release in early 2026, with a hybrid variant expected 6 to 12 months later. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, popular mid-size SUVs in India, will receive hybrid upgrades in 2027. Both SUVs are expected to utilize a hybridized 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid setup.
