The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is set to revolutionize toll collection with the introduction of India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system. This innovative system, developed in partnership with ICICI Bank and implemented by the Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL), will be launched at the Choryasi toll plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat.
The key feature of this system is the elimination of physical barriers, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. High-performance RFID readers and ANPR cameras will read FASTags and vehicle registration numbers, automatically deducting the toll amount. This will reduce traffic congestion, decrease travel time, and lead to fuel savings and reduced emissions. The system is also scheduled for implementation at the Gharaunda toll plaza on NH-44 in Haryana. NHAI plans to expand this system to approximately 25 toll plazas by the fiscal year 2025-26.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav highlighted the significance of this project, emphasizing its role in modernizing the tolling process and making it more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly, a step towards a more technologically advanced highway network.
