Electric vehicles are rapidly gaining traction in the Indian market. The TATA.ev India Charging Report 2025 shows that 84% of the population is now using electric vehicles, a significant increase from 74% in 2023, marking a 10% rise in just two years. This trend highlights the growing acceptance of EVs as a mainstream transportation option.
On average, EV owners drive around 1,600 kilometers per month, which is approximately 40% more than the distance covered by owners of petrol-engine vehicles. This higher mileage indicates greater confidence in EVs and the supporting charging infrastructure.
EVs offer cost benefits and are supported by expanding charging networks. This results in EV owners using their vehicles for around 27 days a month, a 35% increase compared to ICE vehicle owners. EVs are now accessible across 95% of India’s road network, expanding their reach beyond urban centers to include rural areas.
Investment in charging infrastructure is crucial for EV adoption. The report reveals that the number of public charging points has increased fourfold since 2023, reaching 24,000 by mid-2025. National Highways now have fast chargers available every 50 kilometers on 91% of their routes. States such as Karnataka, Kerala, and Punjab have achieved full coverage.
Despite the progress, challenges remain. About 12,000 of the 25,000 public chargers installed by February 2024 were non-functional. Furthermore, the use of multiple apps and payment systems complicates the charging and payment process for customers.
The study highlights the increasing importance of fast charging, with 36% of customers viewing it as a necessity. In 2025, 35% of TATA.ev owners use fast chargers each month, a considerable jump from 21% in 2023.
