The Supreme Court has rejected a legal challenge to the government’s ethanol-blended petrol policy. The ruling, delivered by Justices B.R. Gavai and Vinod Chandran, effectively approves the E20 petrol rollout. The Attorney General emphasized the benefits for sugarcane farmers, which is the source of ethanol, and stated the government’s position that fuel composition is not a matter of consumer choice. The transition to E20 is happening sooner than originally planned, driven by the need to lower the fuel import bill. Maruti Suzuki is considering upgrade kits for older models. The PIL sought an option for pure petrol for older vehicles, citing concerns over fuel efficiency and the availability of alternatives.
