The Supreme Court will review a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to the Indian government’s E20 petrol policy. The hearing is slated for September 1, 2025, with Chief Justice of India BR Gavai leading the bench, accompanied by Justices K Vinod and NV Anjaria. The PIL, presented by Advocate Akshay Malhotra, aims to compel oil marketing companies to keep ethanol-free petrol (E0) accessible in the market. Additionally, the PIL demands that fuel stations provide clear labeling indicating the ethanol content in petrol, enabling informed consumer choices. The government’s mandate for E20 blending aims to reduce crude oil imports and promote cleaner fuels, but potential compatibility issues with older vehicles are at the heart of the concerns.
