
Tesla has introduced a new variant of the Model Y electric SUV specifically for the Chinese market, featuring a long wheelbase and several upgrades. This strategic move aims to increase Tesla’s sales in China, targeting family buyers with a focus on increased interior space and extended driving range.
The new Model Y is 4,976 mm long, which is 179 mm longer than the standard version. The wheelbase has been extended to 3,040 mm, representing an increase of 150 mm. The height is 1,668 mm. Key design changes include a longer roofline, a larger quarter glass, new 19-inch alloy wheels, a black rear spoiler, and a unique ‘Model YYY’ badge on the tailgate. The model also introduces a new Starlight Gold paint option.
The interior boasts a revised 2+2+2 seating configuration. The rear seats feature captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, and electrically folding armrests. The final row provides heating. The car is equipped with a larger 16-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 18-speaker audio system, pillar-mounted air vents, cup holders, and a black headliner for enhanced passenger comfort.
The Model Y L is available exclusively in a long-range variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive. The front motor produces 190 bhp, while the rear motor generates 265 bhp. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 201 km/h. It is powered by an 82 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 751 km on a single charge. The new model weighs 2,088 kg, which is 96 kg more than the standard version.
The new Tesla Model Y L is priced at 3,39,000 Yuan (approximately ₹41.17 lakh) in China. The introduction of this model is expected to strengthen Tesla’s position against local competitors like BYD and NIO. Initially, the long-wheelbase model will only be available in the Chinese market.
