Tesla, the electric car manufacturer spearheaded by Elon Musk, launched the Model Y in India on July 15, 2025. Deliveries began in late September, approximately two months after the launch date. By the close of September, Tesla had delivered 60 Model Y units to Indian customers. Despite the relatively low number of deliveries, this launch marks a significant beginning for Tesla within the Indian market.
During the same period, BMW sold 307 electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz sold 95, and Volvo sold 22 units, according to vehicle portal statistics. Tesla’s 60 unit delivery, with a price tag around ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), positions the Model Y in the luxury EV segment, competing with established European brands.
The Model Y is available in the following configurations:
* Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a range of 500 km (WLTP)
* Long Range RWD offering a range of 622 km
The RWD variant is currently being delivered, while the Long Range model is slated for delivery in the coming months. The Model Y has a starting price of ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla initiated Model Y bookings in July and has received over 600 orders. Initially targeting an annual import of 2,500 units, the company has adjusted its strategy, lowering the import goal to 350 to 500 units per year due to demand. The company is expected to accelerate deliveries of the Tesla Model Y around the Diwali period.
