Owners of electric vehicles in Mumbai and across Maharashtra can celebrate as the government implements a toll exemption policy. The decision, spearheaded by state leaders, offers relief at key toll plazas, starting with the Atal Setu.
The toll exemption policy, effective from August 21, covers the Atal Setu, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg, among others. A state government notification formalizes this. Previously, the toll for cars on Atal Setu was set at Rs 250, slated until December 2025. Now, EV owners enjoy complete toll freedom.
This initiative aligns with the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy, launched in April 2025. The policy originally offered toll exemptions to electric buses and private four-wheelers on main routes. Electric cars also benefit from a 50% toll reduction on other national and state highways. The necessary software for the Atal Setu was prepared and launched, with the expressway and Samruddhi Mahamarg following in two days.
This toll exemption is exclusive to privately and government-owned electric cars and buses. Electric goods vehicles are excluded. The government aims to encourage EV uptake in both public and private sectors and to decrease the reliance on conventional fuels.
The growing popularity of electric vehicles is evident in Mumbai, where 22,400 EVs are registered, including light vehicles, smaller passenger cars, and buses. Approximately 60,000 vehicles traverse the Atal Setu daily, with a steadily increasing portion being EVs, demonstrating the market’s shift toward electric mobility.
