The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has revised the registration renewal fees for vehicles that are 20 years old or older, aiming to reduce pollution and encourage the use of newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles. As part of this initiative, owners of older vehicles will encounter higher costs when renewing their registrations. This policy change is designed to encourage the upgrading of older vehicles, with the exception of vehicles aged between 15 and 20 years. Older vehicles, particularly those manufactured before 2005 that do not meet BSII emission standards, are the primary focus of this initiative.
The revised fee structure outlines significant increases across the board. The cost of re-registering made-in-India cars has doubled, increasing from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Indian-made bikes and scooters will now have a registration fee of ₹2,000, up from ₹1,000. Imported vehicles face the most substantial increases: the fee for 20-year-old imported cars has risen from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000, and re-registering old imported two-wheelers will now cost between ₹10,000 and ₹20,000. The new policy also includes increased fees for three-wheelers, rising from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000, and for other vehicles, including commercial models, increasing from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000.
