The artist had initially shared her ‘devastation’ and ‘frustration’ on social media, posting a video showcasing the considerable damage to her sitar. She emphasized the rarity of such an incident, noting it was the first in almost two decades of traveling with her instrument. Air India acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating their concern for the musician and regret over the distress. While investigating the precise cause of the damage, which involves multiple parties, the airline has agreed to cover the repair costs. Shankar has updated her followers, sharing that a renowned instrument repair specialist is working on her sitar. She expressed hope that the instrument can be fully restored in time for her upcoming ‘India Chapters’ tour. The musician also noted the airline’s commitment to reviewing their handling policies for delicate items, a step she deems crucial for all musicians. The incident has drawn support from fellow artists, highlighting the need for greater care in transporting valuable cultural artifacts.
