A federal judge has dismissed Drake’s defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group, finding that lyrics in Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us” constituted opinion, not fact. The judge stated that given the intense “war of words” between the artists, a reasonable listener would not take the accusations, including those of pedophilia, as verifiable truths. The lawsuit, filed earlier this year, had accused UMG of publishing and promoting the song, arguing it contained damaging false allegations and promoted vigilantism. Drake’s legal team contended that the track negatively impacted his public image and the financial value of his brand. Universal Music Group, which represents both artists, celebrated the court’s decision. A spokesperson for UMG stated the suit “never should have seen the light of day” and reiterated their commitment to Drake’s musical success.
