Daniel Minahan’s *On Swift Horses* is a film that leaves a complex impression. While not entirely unsuccessful, the storytelling at times feels weak. The fact that the movie provokes strong sentiments points to a certain level of success, yet it struggles in portraying ‘forbidden love’ of the 1950s. The plot encounters many hurdles and the writing is shallow at times. The protagonist Muriel reminds of Charulata, yearning for more than her marriage offers. The entrance of her brother-in-law sparks her desires. Julius’s story arc in Las Vegas, including his meetings with Henry, is more engaging than other parts of the film. The relationship between Muriel and her husband Lee seems to be there for the convenience of the storyline. The contrasting personalities of Lee and Julius are used to push Muriel towards her brother-in-law. The mood of the movie is melancholic. It does seem the film is over-planned and under-nourished. Why the need for Muriel’s relationship with her neighbor? The writing weakens the relationships of this film. The actors deserved better writing.
