Ranveer Singh has found himself embroiled in a legal dispute following his performance at IFFI, where he imitated a ritualistic portrayal of a Daiva from the film ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. The act, which recreated Rishab Shetty’s depiction of Chavundi Daiva, has drawn sharp criticism and a formal complaint. An advocate has filed a case alleging that Singh’s imitation was offensive and harmful to the deeply held beliefs of the Tulu community and the broader Hindu faith. The complaint details accusations of illegal and derogatory behavior, with legal proceedings initiated under the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita. Singh has since issued an apology, clarifying his intent was to honor Rishab Shetty’s powerful performance and emphasizing his profound respect for Indian traditions. The ‘Kantara’ franchise has significantly raised awareness about Daiva worship, an ancient spiritual practice prevalent in coastal Karnataka, vital to the cultural identity of the Tulu people and characterized by rituals and divine invocation.
