In Indian cinema, films receive accolades and awards, with the National Film Awards being a prominent honor. Shabana Azmi is a leading example, having received a National Film Award for her debut film and ultimately becoming the actress with the highest number of National Film Awards. The awards recognize the hard work of actors, filmmakers, and others involved in film production. The 71st National Film Awards celebrated achievements from 2023. Shabana Azmi’s initial success came with her debut film, ‘Ankur,’ released in 1974. The film, directed by Shyam Benegal, saw Azmi portray a Dalit woman. She earned her first National Award in 1975 for this role. Further recognition came with her roles in ‘Arth’ (1982) and ‘Khandhar’ (1984). Azmi’s fourth National Award was for her role in the film ‘Paar,’ which highlighted issues of poverty and exploitation, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri. Her fifth award was for the film ‘Godmother’ (1999), based on the life of Santokben Jadeja.
