Bavdhan Budruk is grappling with a significant outbreak of water-borne diseases, as the total number of reported cases has climbed to 94. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials reported a sharp increase with 51 new cases identified on Thursday alone. The initial detection of over 43 cases on Tuesday, primarily in Gunde Vasti, Patil Nagar, Jadhav Vasti, and the Gaothan area, flagged a serious public health concern, with symptoms like vomiting and severe diarrhea being prevalent.
The PMC’s health department swiftly implemented a robust surveillance program across the affected neighborhoods starting Tuesday. This dual approach of hospital reporting and community checks led to the identification of 20 new cases at the PMC hospital’s OPD and another 31 during neighborhood assessments between October 8th and 9th.
The affected population spans various age groups, with adults aged 16 to 45 years being the most affected, comprising 55 cases. Further breakdowns include 20 patients aged 46-60, nine individuals over 60, seven children between 6 and 15 years, and three very young children under five years of age.
According to PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade, the outbreak is largely contained, with most individuals experiencing mild symptoms and requiring only outpatient medical attention. She confirmed that the reported 94 cases primarily developed symptoms a few days prior, suggesting the contamination event has passed, and there are no immediate fresh infections.
Efforts are underway to confirm the resolution of the contamination. The PMC has initiated a thorough investigation by collecting water samples from the affected areas. Twenty-seven samples have been sent for laboratory analysis over the past three days. Authorities are confident that the water supply is now safe, and the coordination between the health and water departments has successfully managed the situation.
