An Air India flight (AI-187) bound for Vienna from Delhi encountered a critical situation mid-air, causing the aircraft to descend by approximately 900 feet just minutes after takeoff on June 14. The event activated stall warnings, creating the risk of a stall or ground collision. The flight crew managed to regain control of the Boeing 777 and stabilized it during unfavorable weather. Although the flight continued safely to Vienna, the DGCA responded by grounding the pilots, requesting Air India’s Head of Safety to be interrogated and launching a comprehensive investigation. The inquiry will assess the possibility of weather-related problems, technical malfunctions, or human error. This incident follows an assessment by the DGCA that brought up shortcomings in Air India’s safety measures, particularly in maintenance and defect resolution, increasing pressure on the airline to improve its operational standards.
