
Following the violent incidents in Leh on September 24th, fueled by demands for Sixth Schedule inclusion and statehood for Ladakh, the head of the Northern Command, General Pratik Sharma, convened with the Lieutenant Governor. The meeting addressed the aftermath of the clashes that resulted in fatalities and injuries. Lieutenant General Sharma and Lieutenant Governor K. Gupta deliberated on the prevailing security scenario in Leh. The talks covered emerging issues in the region, and the importance of collaboration between civil administration and the military forces to maintain stability. The need for coordinated action to handle any potential situation was highlighted. The Lieutenant Governor lauded the army’s contributions in securing the borders and protecting the residents. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Sharma reaffirmed the army’s commitment to the security and integrity of the Union Territory. The meeting also included GOC 14 Corps, Major General Dalbir Singh, MGGGS Northern Command, and Colonel Vikas Vashisht, Deputy Military Advisor to the Northern Army Commander. Four lives were lost in the violence, and 59 others were injured, including 22 police officers. Protesters set a BJP office ablaze, engaged in stone-throwing, and set a CRPF vehicle alight. A curfew was imposed to restore peace. Activist Sonam Wangchuk was apprehended by police and moved to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, under the National Security Act, accused of encouraging youth involvement in the protests. As a precautionary measure, internet services were suspended in Leh.
