The Assam government has taken action against illegal cattle slaughter during the Eid festival, leading to the arrest of 16 individuals, as confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Recovered cattle parts and discovered illegal slaughtering locations in Cachar and Karimganj districts have prompted the crackdown. Sarma emphasized the importance of upholding both religious freedom and public order. The incidents resulted in public demonstrations and clashes with law enforcement in Hojai, with community members reacting to reports of suspected cattle meat. The state’s cattle preservation law regulates slaughter in certain zones based on religious demographics and proximity to religious institutions. Police are investigating after pieces of meat were found in some areas.
