A special POCSO court has sentenced a man to death in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district for the rape and murder of a minor girl. The court classified the case as ‘rarest of rare’. The court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim’s family. The 11-year-old girl was abducted and murdered on September 29, 2023. The girl’s uncle filed a police complaint after she went missing, and her body was later recovered from near a river. The post-mortem confirmed rape and strangulation. In a different legal development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to a man from Uttarakhand who was accused of religious conversion and cheating, considering the approval of the couple’s families for their marriage.
