With the arrival of Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, Indian Railways anticipates a surge in passenger numbers. To tackle this, the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway is set to introduce 52 special festival trains. A proposition has been sent to the Railway Board, and planning for the train schedules is in progress. This move aims to alleviate travel challenges for those traveling during the holidays.
Originally, the proposal involved running 60 trains. This number was adjusted based on the availability of train cars. Presently, the Railway Board manages over 100 trains that traverse Lucknow, catering to routes including Bihar, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi. These trains are part of the North and Northeast Railway network. Despite this, trains face overcrowding during Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.
High passenger demand in Lucknow is causing seat shortages for passengers heading to Bihar and Kolkata. Similar situations are occurring on trains coming from Delhi and Mumbai to Lucknow and Gorakhpur. Even the regular trains, including the festival specials, are completely packed, and even waiting list tickets are unavailable.
To provide ease for passengers, the Lucknow Railway Division has finalized the operation of 52 special festival trains. Railway officials stated that the proposal is awaiting approval from the Railway Board, with an expected decision within a week. Beyond the special trains, the railway administration also plans to introduce circular trains, catering to travel needs between nearby stations.
