With the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections approaching, the NDA government is deploying a strategic approach centered on empowering women. The ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana,’ launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, underscores this strategy. The initiative provides ₹10,000 directly to the bank accounts of 7.5 million women, with a financial commitment of ₹7,500 crore. The primary goal is to promote self-reliance among women and support their participation in self-employment and livelihood activities, as per the central government. Under this scheme, one woman from each family in Bihar will receive financial support, enabling them to choose their preferred employment or entrepreneurial ventures. This will be supported by further financial aid, up to ₹2 lakh. Women can utilize these funds in various sectors including agriculture, animal husbandry, and small-scale industries. The project will be community driven, offering training and support via Self-Help Groups, along with development of rural marketplaces. The use of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) ensures that the funds reach the beneficiaries efficiently, improving transparency and combating corruption, while ensuring benefits are delivered without delay. The Modi-Nitish partnership aims to replicate the success seen in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra where similar women-centric schemes have been implemented.
