The controversy surrounding the voter list in Delhi’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has escalated, with the BJP and Election Commission countering claims made by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Yadav had asserted his name was omitted from the Bihar draft voter list, a claim the Election Commission has deemed false. The BJP, through spokesperson Sambit Patra, has accused Yadav of disseminating misleading information, focusing on the alleged possession of multiple EPIC numbers.
Patra stated that the opposition is attempting to undermine constitutional institutions by making false allegations. During a press conference, he accused Yadav of spreading confusion about his voter registration. Patra questioned how Yadav could have two EPIC numbers and suggested the possibility of fraudulent voter cards, calling it a ‘heinous crime’ against democracy.
Patra highlighted that the Patna District Magistrate clarified the situation and explained that the name was not removed, but that the same EPIC number was used in the previous election. Patra also questioned whether the opposition’s resistance to SIR was connected to these issues. He accused the RJD and Congress-led coalition of prioritizing family over democratic principles. In his statement, Patra said that he had brought records of the last two elections. Sources from the Election Commission also revealed that Yadav used the EPIC number RAB 0456228 in 2020, and that this same number was also recorded in 2015. This number is also present in the draft.
