The political landscape of Bihar is set for a significant transformation. Mungani Lal Mandal, former MP and ex-JDU National Vice President, is poised to become the new state president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Sources within the party indicate that his appointment is nearly certain, and he is scheduled to file his nomination on June 14th at the party office, in the presence of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav.
Discussions regarding leadership changes within the RJD have been ongoing. The departure of current state president Jagdanand Singh is considered imminent. The party aims to give new leadership a chance at the state level to fortify its position among the Extremely Backward Classes and other social groups in the forthcoming assembly elections.
Mandal previously held a role within the RJD before joining the JDU, where he served as National Vice President. He later rejoined the RJD in January 2025, citing unfair treatment towards the Extremely Backward Classes and lack of internal democracy within the JDU.
The formal announcement of Mandal’s appointment as RJD state president is expected on July 5th. The party’s decision is viewed as a strategic endeavor to appeal to the Extremely Backward Classes. This shift highlights a major strategic reorientation for the RJD as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections are witnessing rapid shifts in political dynamics, with both the Mahagathbandhan and NDA adapting their strategies. New parties are also becoming active. This election signifies a period of change in Bihar’s politics. Prashant Kishor has predicted that Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar will lose power. His campaign focuses on clean governance and leadership change.
