Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition, delivered a strong message at a ‘Save Waqf-Save Constitution’ protest in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, organized by Imarat-e-Sharia. He stated emphatically that India belongs to everyone and not to any particular group. He addressed a large crowd of Muslims who had gathered to oppose the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. Yadav alleged the Act was an attempt to usurp Waqf properties and strip Muslims, backward classes and Dalits of their voting rights.
He stated that attempts are being made to divide the nation, but they will resist. He referred to an Election Commission notification that requires 80 million people to re-submit documents, and he vowed to stand with them. He also acknowledged the contributions of people from all religions to build the nation.
Tejashwi Yadav also promised to repeal the Act in Bihar if his government takes office. Akhtarul Iman of AIMIM called the Act a conspiracy against minorities. The opposition alleges that the law infringes on the autonomy of the Waqf Board and concentrates power in the hands of district magistrates. The central government, meanwhile, maintains the Act aims to promote transparency, increase women’s participation, and prevent misuse of Waqf properties. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the validity of the Act, and the ruling is pending.
In a minor incident, Tejashwi Yadav narrowly escaped injury. While preparing to speak at Gandhi Maidan, a drone flew dangerously close to his face. He ducked, and a bystander knocked it down. He quickly regained his composure.
