Mayawati, the head of the Bahujan Samaj Party, has strongly criticized the recent imposition of high tariffs by the United States on Indian products. She characterized the tariffs as ‘Trump Tariff Terror’ and urged the central government to take strong measures to address the repercussions. According to Mayawati, the government must initiate significant and effective reforms to protect the interests of the public in light of these tariffs. She warned that failure to do so would lead to greater difficulties for the people, including escalating issues of poverty, unemployment, and inflation, which would, in turn, harm the nation’s reputation and international standing. These remarks were made by Mayawati during a BSP review meeting held in Lucknow. This statement follows a period of perceived warming in relations between the US and India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s positive comments on the partnership between the two countries. The US has increased tariffs on Indian goods by 50 percent, creating tension between the two countries, and India has criticized the US actions as unjustified. The statement is particularly relevant as it comes amid concerns from exporters in Uttar Pradesh, who are facing the negative impact of the tariffs imposed on Indian imports by the US. They are warning about potential job losses, order cancellations, and a reduction in market access.
