The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to construct a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Madhuravoyal in Chennai, approved to enhance the infrastructure in the western part of the city. The project, costing approximately ₹1,250 crore, will facilitate easier access for vehicles traveling from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore. Tenders have been issued, and construction is expected to begin within three months, with a completion target of two and a half years. This 8.1 km elevated corridor will have entry and exit points at the beginning and end only, and a toll will be applied. NHAI’s Project Director in Chennai, I.S. Janakumaran, confirmed that the construction will include maintaining 10 lanes, including service lanes, to prevent traffic disruptions. The corridor is expected to dramatically cut travel time, with the 22 km journey taking less than 20 minutes when connected to a future extension. This project should provide substantial benefit to the Chennai Port by expediting cargo movement. Local community members have offered suggestions regarding improving service lanes and expediting construction. Concurrently, the NHAI is involved in constructing a four-lane Thiruvarur bypass and continuing work on the National Expressway-7, expanding infrastructure across multiple regions.
