An explosion at the Chirmiri open cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district has led to injuries for three mine workers, including two women. The incident occurred during the afternoon preparation for a blasting operation, when a team was placing explosives. A sudden, unintended blast ensued, causing fragments to impact workers and vehicles in the vicinity.
Immediate medical attention was provided to the injured at the SECL regional hospital in Kurasia, Chirmiri. All three are reported to have sustained minor injuries and are out of danger, with planned discharge imminent. Authorities are investigating the cause, with a preliminary assessment pointing towards a possible technical malfunction. A formal inquiry has been launched to ascertain the precise reason, examining aspects like equipment integrity, adherence to protocols, and potential human error. Operations have been temporarily halted at the mine for safety checks and to facilitate the ongoing investigation. Reinforcing safety protocols in mining environments remains a critical focus following such incidents.
