Electricity consumers in Chhattisgarh are facing a financial setback starting in September. For a considerable duration, electricity users enjoyed a 50% discount on consumption up to 400 units. This discount significantly reduced their bills. The government, however, has eliminated this subsidy, effective from the beginning of August. This policy change will directly affect the bills issued in September. Consequently, consumers will experience a rise in their electricity bills, with the increase ranging from 558 to 1223 rupees per month. The state government had initiated a scheme on March 1, 2019, offering a 50% discount to domestic consumers for electricity consumption up to 400 units monthly. This benefit was available to all eligible consumers, providing relief regardless of their overall usage. Even those exceeding the 400-unit mark received the discount on the initial units. Consumption beyond 400 units was billed at the standard rate. This subsidy is now being removed. The resulting increase in electricity costs will likely strain household budgets.
