Chhattisgarh Now Leading State in Complex Heart Treatments – Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai
State’s health infrastructure becoming a symbol of modernity and trust – Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal
Sixth in the country and the first case of Backman Total Physiological Pacing in a government institution at ACI: Chhattisgarh achieved historical success
The first case of lead placement in the right atrium or Backman bundle
Raipur, A team of doctors from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, the oldest and largest in the state and a symbol of excellence in modern medical science, and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, has continuously set such records in complex treatments that everyone can be proud of. The latest example is the cardiology department of the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), where the sixth in the country and the first Backman Total Physiological Pacing of any government institution was successfully performed on a 68-year-old female patient.
According to doctors, this complex procedure has not been done so far in top institutions like AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh. Backman Total Physiological Pacing means – controlling the heartbeat completely through the natural conduction system, so that the patient can get a stable and safe heart rate for a long time.
It is noteworthy that so far, many cases of lead placement in the left bundle or His bundle have been done in ACI and other government cardiac institutions, but this is the first case of lead placement in the right atrium i.e. Backman bundle. With this, the heartbeats of both the chambers of the heart continue to be operated by the natural electrical pathway (conduction system).
Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of Cardiology Department, ACI, said that this patient, a resident of Raipur, was suffering from a serious heart disease called Sick Sinus Syndrome. In this disease, the cells that give heartbeat to the heart (pacemaker cells) are damaged and the heartbeat becomes irregular. Generally, in such cases, ventricular or left bundle pacing is done, but this patient’s heart was weak and atrial rhythm was also irregular. There was a risk of heart failure and rapid heartbeat only by doing ventricular pacing.
For this reason, the ACI team decided on Backman Total Physiological Pacing. In this process, pacemaker leads were placed in the atrium part of the natural electrical structure of the heart. This technique helps the heart to beat in its natural way and greatly reduces the risk of heart failure.
How the procedure was completed
First, electrophysiology mapping of the left bundle was done. Then, similarly, the mapping of the Backman bundle of the right atrium was done and the lead was implanted. In this way, the entire pacing system started working naturally.
The treatment team included Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of Cardiology, Dr. S. K. Sharma, Dr. Kunal Ostwal, Dr. Anurag Kujur and Dr. Ved Prakash. This treatment was done under the Mukhyamantri Vishesh Swasthya Sahayata Yojana, in which Medico Social Worker Khogendra Sahu made a special contribution in providing the benefits of the scheme.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, while congratulating the people of the state on this achievement, said that this successful treatment done by the Advanced Cardiac Institute is proof of the high level and continuous progress of Chhattisgarh’s medical services. He said that the state’s largest government hospital is no longer limited to only general treatments, but is also successfully performing world-class complex procedures. The Chief Minister, while congratulating the team of doctors, said that this achievement not only gives new hope to the lives of patients, but also shows that government institutions are setting new records in medical science.
Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said that this complex treatment done by Advanced Cardiac Institute, Raipur is an indicator of the strength of the state’s health infrastructure and the excellent capabilities of the doctors. He said that now the patients of Chhattisgarh will not have to depend on the metros for advanced cardiac procedures. The state government’s effort is that every citizen should be provided free and high-level medical facilities through schemes like Mukhyamantri Vishesh Swasthya Sahayata Yojana. The Health Minister, while wishing the medical team, said that this achievement will make Chhattisgarh more prestigious on the national medical map.
It is noteworthy that in the year 2022-23, ACI was at the fifth position in the country in the treatment of the highest number of electrophysiology cases.
