Chhattisgarh is on the cusp of a mineral revolution following the discovery of nickel, chromium, and platinum group elements (PGEs) in the Mahasamund district. The find, made by Deccan Gold Mining Limited (DGML) in a recently acquired concession area, signifies a pivotal moment for the state’s mineral sector. The Bhalukona–Jamnidih block, spanning about 3,000 hectares, holds promising potential. Initial investigations by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) identified the presence of these key minerals, prompting the Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM) to conduct an e-auction. DGML won the auction on March 6, 2023, with a winning bid of 21%. DGM Chhattisgarh provided technical assistance to expedite exploration efforts, which encompassed extensive geological mapping, rock chip sampling, drone-based magnetic surveys, and Induced Polarization (IP) surveys. The preliminary findings have been positive, revealing a 700-meter mineralized zone within the likely presence of mafic-ultramafic rock formations. Geophysical surveys indicate sulfide minerals are present up to a depth of 300 meters, underlining the area’s significant mineral potential. The nearby Kelverdbury block, previously awarded to M/s Vedanta Limited, enhances the strategic significance of the Mahasamund region as a hub for strategic minerals. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed satisfaction with the discovery, emphasizing its role in securing vital mineral resources and fostering the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The state government is fully committed to supporting scientific and detailed mineral exploration and development. The focus on strategic and crucial minerals is evident in the 2024-25 exploration plans, with a majority of the proposals centered on these minerals. The state has successfully auctioned 51 mineral blocks to date, including deposits of graphite, nickel, chromium, PGEs, lithium, glauconite, phosphorite, and graphite-vanadium. Additionally, 6 tin blocks have been designated for auction by the Ministry of Mines. To further these efforts, DGM, Chhattisgarh, has established a Critical Mineral Cell, which will collaborate with research, academic, and professional institutions to facilitate mineral exploration and refinement. The Secretary of the Department of Mineral Resources, Mr. P. Dayanand, stated that this discovery is more than just a scientific achievement; it is a strategic advantage. He highlighted the crucial role of minerals like nickel and PGEs for green energy and high-tech industries, and how Chhattisgarh is committed to playing a key role in India’s strategic mineral landscape, with full institutional and operational support. Experts believe this discovery strengthens Chhattisgarh’s mineral wealth and paves the way for the discovery of useful minerals in areas such as modern technology, national security, and clean energy.
