The Chhattisgarh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, is implementing its Good Governance policy with a focus on transparency and efficiency. The Commercial Tax (GST) Department is undergoing a major restructuring, with large-scale transfers of personnel. This move marks a significant shift from the previous trend of limited transfers within the department. Many officers and employees had remained in the same postings for extended periods, some for as long as 18 years, which was seen as an impediment to fair tax administration and revenue collection. The transfers involved a significant number of officers, including Deputy Commissioners and State Tax Officers, with new postings and assignments. Several officers had served in the same locations for many years. The government has also addressed the imbalance in the distribution of departmental offices. While previously, the department had numerous circles, the physical offices were limited to only a few districts. New offices are now being established in previously unrepresented districts, ensuring a wider presence of the department across the state. This reform is aimed at decentralizing tax administration and strengthening revenue collection. The department has also formed BIU and audit units to enhance efficiency. The transfers have been carried out with consideration for the personal circumstances of the employees. The government prioritized keeping spouses in the same district and relocating female officers to nearby locations whenever possible. The Finance Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to upholding an honest, transparent, and dedicated work culture.
