Raipur is witnessing another online fraud incident, this time involving a woman who was swindled out of ₹18 lakh under the pretense of marriage. The fraudster, posing as a resident of the UK, made contact with the victim via the Bharat Matrimony platform. The victim reported the incident to the local police after realizing she had been deceived.
The incident took place within the Khamhardih police station’s jurisdiction. The 38-year-old complainant, residing in Bhawna Nagar, Khamhardih, detailed in her police report how she uploaded her profile on a matrimonial site. She connected with Dr. Shiva Kumar, alias Surendra, on May 19, 2025. Shiva claimed to be from the UK and proposed marriage, starting a series of conversations.
Later, the accused expressed his intent to visit Raipur. On May 22, he contacted her, stating he was at Delhi airport and being held by customs, requesting ₹18 lakh to resolve the issue. The woman, persuaded by the story, transferred the money to various accounts.
After receiving the funds, the accused switched off his phone. Repeated attempts by the woman to contact Shiva were unsuccessful. Feeling deceived, she reported the matter to the police. The Khamhardih police station has filed a case under BNS 318-4 and is actively investigating to find the accused.
