Jayant Patil, the Maharashtra state president of the NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction, has resigned from his position. This announcement comes at a crucial time, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections and other local body elections across Maharashtra fast approaching. Patil held the position of party president for seven years.
Patil indicated that he had personally asked the party leadership to release him from his responsibilities to allow for a transition to new leadership. It is speculated that Shashikant Shinde is the frontrunner to become the new state president, with a final decision expected to be made during the NCP (Sharad Pawar) executive meeting on Tuesday.
The BMC elections are anticipated to be fiercely contested, with a direct competition between the BJP, the Shinde Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, against the Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction. The BMC elections are considered highly significant, and a robust competition is anticipated. The role of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray remains uncertain, as his electoral alliances are still unclear.
In June 2023, a significant split within the NCP occurred when Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar’s nephew, along with 40 MLAs, left the party. In recent months, there was a lot of speculation in Maharashtra’s political circles regarding a potential reconciliation between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar.
These speculations were reinforced by the fact that Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar had met three to four times in the recent past. Furthermore, the political landscape in Maharashtra is evolving, with new equations emerging, particularly after former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray shared a platform.
