Raipur’s police department has implemented a new rule requiring two-wheeler showrooms to include a helmet with every new vehicle sold. This measure is a direct response to the increasing number of road accident fatalities caused by head injuries. Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Lal Umed Singh issued the order, highlighting the importance of this initiative. In the last seven months, the city witnessed over 190 deaths in road accidents involving two-wheelers, despite awareness campaigns. Furthermore, over 20,495 individuals were penalized for not wearing helmets. The SSP’s directive clarifies that non-compliance will result in action against showroom owners, including the possibility of business certificate suspension or cancellation. The order reinforces the existing law under Motor Vehicles Act 1989, section 138, which already mandates helmet provision with vehicle sales. The SSP has appealed to vehicle sellers and the public to take safety precautions seriously, recognizing that wearing a helmet is crucial for personal and family safety.
