An unintended explosion at the Chirmiri open cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district has resulted in injuries to three workers. The incident, involving South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), occurred on Monday afternoon while a team was preparing for a routine blasting activity.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports suggest that a group of workers was busy setting explosives on the coal bed. The blast happened suddenly before the planned detonation sequence could be executed. The impact caused debris to scatter, hitting several workers and machinery. The three injured individuals, including two women, were immediately attended to and transported to the Kurasia hospital. Their condition is stable, and medical professionals anticipate their swift recovery and release.
An official inquiry is now underway to ascertain the precise cause of the premature explosion. While a technical defect is the leading theory, all potential factors, including operational errors, are being meticulously examined. The mining site has been cordoned off for safety and investigative purposes, leading to a temporary halt in mining operations. This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent safety standards in mining operations, and efforts are being made to reinforce these measures.
