Raipur, May 07, 2025 / A major announcement for Chhattisgarh was made today at the Central Cabinet meeting held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Along with the expansion of the IIT Bhilai campus, new facilities will be available for technical education and research. Besides this, more students will now get an opportunity to study at IIT Bhilai. Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for the announcement made regarding the expansion of IIT Bhilai. He said that it is another big step by Prime Minister Shri Modi in the direction of the goal of a developed India and a developed Chhattisgarh.
It is noteworthy that the Union Cabinet has approved the expansion of academic and infrastructure facilities of five new IIT institutions in the country, including IIT Bhilai in Chhattisgarh. With the decision of the Union Cabinet, more than 6,500 students across the country will be able to fulfill their dream of studying in prestigious institutions in the coming four years. The special thing is that IIT Bhilai will now have more seats, which will benefit the youth of Chhattisgarh as well as other parts of the country. With this decision, along with the infrastructure expansion of IIT Bhilai campus, not only will students benefit, but new employment opportunities will also be created at the local level. With the recruitment of teachers, employees and researchers, the demand for housing, transportation and other services in the surrounding areas will also increase.
IIT Bhilai is already functioning in its permanent campus, but after this expansion, the institute will now become a center of education and innovation for even more students. It is worth mentioning that 13,687 seats will be available for students across the country in four years, which is currently 7,111. This means that there will be an increase of 6,576 new seats. The Indian Institutes of Technology in the country that have been approved for expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity include IITs of Andhra Pradesh (Tirupati), Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu), Karnataka (Dharwad) and Kerala (Palakkad) along with Bhilai. The Central Government has approved a budget of Rs 11,828.79 crore for their expansion, which will be spent from the year 2025-26 to 2028-29. Under this, not only new buildings and modern facilities will be built, but 130 new professor posts will also be created, which will further strengthen the level of education and research. Five new state-of-the-art research parks are also being built to strengthen industry-academia relations.
