The Chhattisgarh government’s implementation of an OTP system for ration cards has led to significant difficulties for beneficiaries, particularly in rural areas with inconsistent network access. This shift has caused disruptions in the timely distribution of food supplies, impacting both ration shop operators and the public.
The OTP-based verification system has proven problematic due to slow or unreliable network connectivity, common in rural regions. As a result, obtaining rations has become a time-consuming process, causing long wait times at ration shops. Many are waiting extended periods, and some report receiving their rations only after several days. This situation affects those who depend on the ration shop for their food needs.
The change has made the ration distribution process slower. The former fingerprint system allowed shops to serve a greater number of customers daily. Public feedback indicates a preference for restoring the fingerprint system, or for running it in conjunction with the OTP method, to allow quicker service and efficient ration distribution. The current system raises the fear of food shortages for those who depend on ration shop supplies.
Besides OTP issues, the non-availability of kerosene in ration shops for the past eight months is another concern. The authorities are asked to sort out the OTP system and ensure kerosene availability in the villages.
