A violent confrontation unfolded between two groups in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Friday night, escalating from an initial dispute. Both sides engaged in stone-pelting, and numerous vehicles were damaged. Police intervened promptly to bring the situation under control, and a large police presence was deployed to maintain order. The unrest resulted in injuries to four police officers.
A mob in Siddharthnagar set fire to a tempo and a car and vandalized several other vehicles. The origin of the tension appears to have stemmed from the removal of a stage near the Siddharthnagar command, which was set up for the Rajebagswar Football Club’s anniversary. This removal triggered the clashes, resulting in heavy stone-pelting between the two groups.
The police have since brought the situation under control. The atmosphere remained tense until late at night, but has now calmed down. The police and the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) are deployed across Siddharthnagar.
According to SP Yogesh Kumar, the clash involved individuals from two communities. A misunderstanding led to the situation, and the communities are now separated. Further investigation and action are ongoing. The primary cause of the conflict appears to have been a dispute during an event. Kumar urged people to disregard and not share any false information or rumours.
Police are working to identify the individuals involved in the previous night’s disturbances. They are using CCTV footage and statements from witnesses to take action against the instigators.
Following the incidents, the police have appealed to the public to avoid spreading rumors and refrain from sharing inflammatory content on social media. The administration has deployed additional police forces in the affected area.
