The monsoon session of Parliament has been marked by persistent disruptions and protests, primarily driven by the opposition’s strong objections to alleged ‘vote theft’ and the implementation of SIR. On the 17th day of the session, the opposition members continued to express their discontent, creating considerable disorder. Demonstrations included throwing paper at the Speaker’s chair and shouting slogans, leading to the adjournment of both houses until August 18th. There are suggestions that the government may conclude the session ahead of schedule, especially considering the approaching five-day recess. The session is scheduled to be in recess from August 13th to August 15th, followed by the weekend break. This arrangement sets the stage for the resumption of proceedings on August 18th. The monsoon session of Parliament is expected to conclude on August 21st. There is speculation regarding a potential early adjournment of the session. The opposition has been highly critical of SIR from the beginning, particularly concerning its implementation in Bihar. The opposition has organized protests throughout the country. Over 65 lakh names were removed in Bihar due to SIR, including the names of deceased, shifted, and duplicate voters. The opposition has decried the move as being taken hastily. The opposition’s vehement stance has caused major disruptions in the parliamentary sessions. Intense protests and chaos have overshadowed the proceedings of the Lok Sabha. On Tuesday, opposition members engaged in aggressive sloganeering, throwing paper at the chair, hindering the progress of legislative work. Several crucial bills were passed without debate.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the behavior of the opposition MPs has hurt the dignity of the Parliament. He added that while in opposition, they always protested in a respectable manner. He mentioned that the members were sent to the house to work, not to throw papers. Opposition MPs demonstrated solidarity against vote theft and SIR through a march. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders were taken into custody. However, they were later released. They raised slogans of “Stop Vote Theft” and “No to Dictatorship.” Rahul Gandhi had previously accused the Election Commission of vote theft during a press conference, alleging duplicate voter registrations and multiple voting instances. He cited the Mahadevapura constituency in Karnataka as an example, where he claimed more than 1 lakh votes were stolen and a woman voted twice.
